Slip-Sliding Away from democracy

The Paul Simon song of the title has always been one of my favourites.

And I know a father who had a son
He longed to tell him all the reasons for the things he’d done
He came a long way just to explain
He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping
Then he turned around and he headed home again

Despite all the talk about democracy and spreading it around the world, we did not invent it. Democracy is an ancient concept. The people of the US do not support it and have willingly watched the country become ever less democratic year after year.

Whoah God only knows, God makes his plan
The information’s unavailable to the mortal man
We’re workin’ our jobs, collect our pay
Believe we’re gliding down the highway, when in fact we’re slip sliding away …

I don’t think that most Americans realize just how far the country has slipped away from the idea of Democracy over the last century. As an example, most Americans long for peace in the world yet the main rule of American foreign policy is that hypocrisy and expedience trump all of our principles. We have supported the most brutal of dictators as long as they were willing to obey us and support our goal of world domination.

The Founding Fathers created a republic. In a true democracy, the people would decide all the issues while in a republic the people elect representatives to vote for them. Our republic has come to look more and more like the rule of an elected dictator called a “president”. President Obama is fighting for the power to jail anyone on the earth (within his reach) without charge or trial if that person is a citizen or not! Tyranny obviously. But he also asserts the right to kill anyone on the planet if he simple charges that the person (adult or child) is a “terrorist”. Execution without a trial. We have slip-slided back to the barbarism of the all powerful kings of old.

It would be well past time for my fellow citizens to wake up.
