Florida and stupid gambling laws

Florida has a raft of stupid gambling laws that target the private individual even as the State of Florida is running a huge gambling enterprise. There is no victim in private gambling and the masses should be allowed to do as they please in this matter.

Micheal S. Rozeff wrote:

During Prohibition, my grandmother (widowed) on my mother’s side made beer in a hidden room and sold it locally, until a neighbour snitched on her. My mom, a youngster, used to distribute the beer in pails. My dad drove a taxi for a short spell and he too carried booze. None of them was flush with cash. My mother-in-law, who was quite hard up, used to run card games in her home.

He then talked about a police raid in Florida against a free poker playing league. Florida has hypocritical laws against gambling:

“849.01 Keeping gambling houses, etc.—Whoever by herself or himself, her or his servant, clerk or agent, or in any other manner has, keeps, exercises or maintains a gaming table or room, or gaming implements or apparatus, or house, booth, tent, shelter or other place for the purpose of gaming or gambling or in any place of which she or he may directly or indirectly have charge, control or management, either exclusively or with others, procures, suffers or permits any person to play for money or other valuable thing at any game whatever, whether heretofore prohibited or not, shall be guilty of a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.”

Florida has always had state approved gambling. You can bet on horse races, dog races, or a game called jai alai which is played in a thing called a fronton as long as the State of Florida is getting their cut of the actions. In this regard it is much like giving the Mafia its cut of the action to stay in business.

The State of Florida runs a huge lottery and its gambling department sells “scratch off” gaming tickets in nearly every convince store in the state plus other stores. The Lottery was originally sold to Floridians as a way to add extra money to the education of our young. It morphed into almost its only funding. Surprise!

The government’s cronies run racetrack and casinos while the government runs other gambling operations all while a regular person can go to prison for playing a little poker for small stakes. This example of gambling hypocrisy is government at its most transparent. Government exists for the insiders and only for the insiders. Government does not exist to give the masses anything — the masses exist for government to feed off of.
