Florida has a raft of stupid gambling laws that target the private individual even as the State of Florida is running a huge gambling enterprise. There is no victim in private gambling and the masses should be allowed to do as they please in this matter.

During Prohibition, my grandmother (widowed) on my mother’s side made beer in a hidden room and sold it locally, until a neighbour snitched on her. My mom, a youngster, used to distribute the beer in pails. My dad drove a taxi for a short spell and he too carried booze. None of them was flush with cash. My mother-in-law, who was quite hard up, used to run card games in her home.

Florida has always had state approved gambling. You can bet on horse races, dog races, or a game called jai alai which is played in a thing called a fronton as long as the State of Florida is getting their cut of the actions. In this regard it is much like giving the Mafia its cut of the action to stay in business.
The State of Florida runs a huge lottery and its gambling department sells “scratch off” gaming tickets in nearly every convince store in the state plus other stores. The Lottery was originally sold to Floridians as a way to add extra money to the education of our young. It morphed into almost its only funding. Surprise!
The government’s cronies run racetrack and casinos while the government runs other gambling operations all while a regular person can go to prison for playing a little poker for small stakes. This example of gambling hypocrisy is government at its most transparent. Government exists for the insiders and only for the insiders. Government does not exist to give the masses anything — the masses exist for government to feed off of.
