I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
And I’ve been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord
Those lyrics by Phil Collins were written just after his divorce and were about his feelings on the unraveling of his marriage and they suit my thoughts about the way I feel about the coming unraveling of the USA. I don’t wish for a sudden catastrophe with blood in the streets and starvation on a mass scale. I am hoping for a relatively smooth path towards the voluntarism based system that I envision for our society. I think that secession is a reasonable first step in reducing the size, scope, and power of the central government.
Is secession legal? Many throughout our history have said that it always has been.
“Secession is a deeply American principle. This country was born through secession.” ~ Ron Paul
In Murray Rothbard’s Man, Economy, and State (page 1283) there is the following passage:
For if someone contends that the majority in Country X should govern that country, then it could be argued with equal validity that the majority of a certain district within Country X should be allowed to govern itself and secede from the larger country, and this subdividing process can logically proceed down to the village block, the apartment house, and, finally, each individual, thus marking the end of all democratic government through reduction to individual self-government.
This passage by Rothbard clearly lays out the case for secession of any state, any county, or any town in the USA. And, as you can plainly see, Rothbard believed that secession right on down to the level of the human individual was moral and legal. Chis Bassil wrote a Mises Daily article, “The Secession Solution.” where he essentially came to the same conclusion as Murray Rothbard’s view of the matter.
There has been a lot of talk about secession after Obama started his campaign to disarm the public with new and draconian gun control laws. But it has been obvious for decades that America is deeply divided on issue after issue. These differences are irreconcilable and we must look to divorce before we go postal and a bloody revolution breaks out. Many Americans want to control the lives of other people while many just want to be left alone to live their lives in peace. There can be no reconciling this huge difference in political aim.
Secession is the peaceful solution. Those that want to leave the
Empire Union should just leave — which beats the hell out of Americans using the brute force of government to beat liberty-minded people into submission. We can all agree that when a marriage is broken that divorce is much better than one spouse killing the other. The government has broken its vows with the people and simply shredded the constitution and so the people would be well advised to seek divorce — that is, secession.
It matters little if you believe that the constitution was written in the first place to allow the federal government to become a dictatorial usurper of the people’s liberties or if it was an honest attempt to constrain the awesome power of government. It matters little because either way it has failed miserably to stop the federal government from becoming a dystopian nightmare.
As I argued in a past post the USA has become an Empire — a destroyer of countries and cultures. We have set the middle east aflame and many of its countries and societies are in ruins now due to our interventions. How can non-interventionists such as myself ever reconcile this wholesale destruction and mass murder with our principles? I demand the right to secede from this horror of a country that the USA has become.
Not only have we become an Empire which invades other countries and destroys them on a regular basis, we have also become a police state as I outlined in a post sometime ago. Not only that, but I opined that Americans must have cognitive deficiency if they don’t see that we are in deep trouble right now and that our own government is the perpetrator of much evil in the world both at home and abroad.
Secession is an idea that is in the air tonight.
